First, logistics: It was really, really well put together. From the beginning and as the trip went on, it was plain that everything had been planned out so that it went like clockwork. Transport, food and lodgings, even which spot we surfed and when was perfect.
Food, lodging: We were set up at Jawa Jiwa and again, great choice. The staff, the accommodations and the food were soooo good. And on days we’d be surfing through a meal, they made sure our choice of meals were delivered to the beach! C’mon!
The crew: Tommy, Kevin, Gi, Eddy and Billy are the best. Seriously. Coolest people, and each of them tops at what they do. They made sure we all got waves, Tommy is a legend and didn’t just get your typical “good Go Pro shot” but took amazing shots of everyone and videos that were so helpful in the review sessions. Eddy was on the drone and he too never phoned it in but made even my kooking it look like art, haha. Gi and Billy were in the water, looking out and making sure we got waves. And most of all, those guys knew the area so well there were times we rolled up and it looked meh snd within 20 minutes the tide had changed and we were waxing up for a long sesh. It wasn’t coincidence.
Kevin is a natural teacher/coach. I don’t know any pro surfers so I assumed he was kind of a name to draw customers. Huge apology Kevin🙏. He was totally committed to helping me surf better. Every day he took us each through our waves and broke down what we could work on in a way that you could really understand and apply. Then he was in the water, offering guidance on positioning, movement, stance. He took it way seriously and again, such a genuinely good dude. I was the oldest and worst surfer in the group and they were so cool and inclusive and happy to make sure I had a good time, I can’t thank them enough.
I’d never been on a purchased surf trip and honestly, I looked at it as an opportunity to check out the fabled G-Land with people who knew their way around, hopefully score a few. It was so much more than that. I already told them I want a spot on the next trip. I feel like I took a chance with no real expectations and ended up with a seriously killer lifetime experience. Soooo truly grateful!
(I didn’t even get to the other people on the trip. I’d need another page for them. They could’ve easily written me off as the old kook or whatever, it coulda been cliquey or egos, or surfy alpha stuff. I wouldn’t have blamed them. But they were the best group, every single one a solid human, characters in the best way, and core Mantak Meeeeeen!)
